Finding Funding for Unpaid Internships

Most internship opportunities available for UW students are paid, however an unpaid internship can be a good option for students in particular industries. Here are some resources you can utilize to secure funding for your unpaid internship.

Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships, and Awards

There are many scholarships that could support you. The OMSFA helps University of Washington students and alumni connect with and apply competitively for scholarships that support their goals. Learn more by visiting their website.

Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship

The Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship encourages students to develop their leadership abilities through practical experience, personal reflection and in community with mentors and peers. Applications are accepted each Autumn quarter.

Scholarship for Unpaid Public-Sector Internships

If you are interning with a non-profit or government organization in the summer, consider applying to the Baldasty & Beam Scholarship for Unpaid Internships. If selected, you can receive up to $2,500 to support your internship.

Find Paid Opportunities

Over 90% of all internship postings on Handshake are paid. Plus, campus departments hire hundreds of students every year for on-campus jobs, internships, research positions and more. Consider what skills and experiences you are hoping to gain and if there are alternate ways to achieve those goals.
