Peer Connection Leader (Summer 2024)
Description
CIRCLE & FYP at the University of Washington, Seattle are launching another year of Regional Connection Groups (or RCG) to virtually connect and engage international freshmen and transfers during the summer. With training and guidance provided by these offices, Peer Connection Leaders (PCLs) will interact with international students through social media group chats and Zoom sessions from mid June to the end of September. The goal is to help students build a community and learn transitional skills as they prepare for their arrivals to the U.S.. PCLs will assist these students by presenting sessions in Zoom, answering questions in chats, introducing resources, etc.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate student at the UW – Seattle Campus.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 upon application and maintained throughout tenure in the position unless academic performance has been discussed with the supervisor alternative arrangement with regard to GPA has been agreed upon.
Desired Skills and Abilities
- Strong desire to help and build rapport with new international students as they transition to UW
- Ability to create a warm and welcoming environment while clearly presenting key information
- Being able to speak one or more of the following languages to engage students from specific regions of the world: Mandarin, Korean, Hindi, Thai, Japanese, etc.
- Social media savvy; comfortable to use your personal social media account to engage students
- Be able to advise students in virtual sessions and social media chats with professionalism and compassion
- Proficient with Google Suite products and other collaboration tools
- Knowledge of, or an aptitude and willingness to learn about, a wide variety of UW resources and services especially those for international students
- Comfortable working with a diverse population both in groups and individually
- Open-mindedness to different cultures and others with different backgrounds.
- Be proactive problem solvers who are able to receive constructive feedback
- Highly organized and detail-oriented

- Compensation is $19.97 per hour
Hours & Timeline: PCLs are expected to be available for these times in or outside of U.S..
- Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 5-8pm: team bonding (in person)
- Thursday, June 13, 2024, from 6-8pm; pre-launch check-in (virtual)
- July 13- August 31, Weekly 2-hour training. Specific dates will be shared in interviews; 12 hours/week (virtual)
- (Optional) Last two weeks of September to help new students transition; 10 hours/week (in person)

The interview (Only if you are selected into the interview round):
- 1-minute self introduction (public speaking skills)
- 10-minute teaching demo, choosing one topic from this list (presenting skills)
- Afterwards, we will also be asking 1-2 questions during the interview. (ex.What is a FIG? What do I do if I did not submit my AP scores before my A&O? I want to change my roommates, what do I do?) (Researching & advising skills)
