Position Description & Educational Benefits:
The UWave Radio Station Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the UWave Radio as a media outlet and as an organization in the UW Bothell campus community. The Station Manager oversees day-to-day operation of the station; they maintain the UWave Studio space, submit funding requests, lead planning of quarterly Student Media Open Mic Nights, and collaborates with UWave Radio volunteers, contributors, and partners, while ensuring that the station follows UWB, SEA, and FCC regulations and guidelines.
This position gets hands-on experience in station management, budget proposals, interviewing, reporting, broadcasting, podcasting, audio editing, using broadcasting equipment, maintaining technology, and training others how to do the same.
The Station Manager gains valuable leadership experience in working with campus partners, vendors, leading meetings with other student leaders, collaborating with student groups and Student Media team members, marketing, recruitment/outreach, engagement, and hosting events, along with other Student Media programs, throughout the year.
Duties & Responsibilities:
UWave & Radio Station Operations:
- Manages day-to-day administrative functions of the station (organizing the UWave Studio space, submitting purchase requests, supporting the various internal focus areas (radio programming, business development, volunteer onboarding, event planning), and lead the training of volunteers, contributors, and CELR students, and those utilizing the UWave studio and equipment
- Serve as primary point-of-contact and oversee communications with UWave volunteers, CELR students, other inquiries for UWave Radio, and UW Bothell administration
- Plan weekly one-on-one meetings with their supervisor, Studio Engineer, and with Faculty Adviser (may take place bi-weekly)
- Work with the Studio Engineer on radio equipment maintenance and technology checkout processes
- Oversees all UWave Radio social media, website, and engagement accounts
- Research new opportunities to expand UWave programs and operations, such as: conferences, studio space planning, UWave offerings, and establishing new campus partnerships
Radio Broadcasting Ethics, Regulations, & Policies:
- Uphold broadcasting and radio ethics and standards in all broadcasts and operations
- Ensures the UWave Radio station follows relevant regulations and guidelines including state law and university policy, as well as federal laws including those related to radio broadcasting and copyright usage
- Collaborate with the faculty adviser and Studio Engineer when issues regarding broadcasting, technology, and radio ethics arises
- Enforce UWave Radio’s Code of Conduct and studio policies with all participating student members, studio users, volunteers/contributors, and content published through UWave
Leadership & Training
- Partner with the Studio Engineer in providing broadcast/podcasting training, ensuring UWave station volunteers, student leaders, and studio users are equipped to use the studio and UWave equipment
- Support the recruitment and training of incoming Station Manager and Studio Engineer, along with other relevant Student Media staff for the following year
- Schedule and lead meetings with UWave student leaders, volunteers/contributors, studio users, and interested potential UWave members
Student Media Programming, Engagement, & Collaboration:
- Lead the planning, facilitation, and evaluation of Student Media Open Mic Nights and UWave events, workshops, and other programs, including: concert collaborations with clubs or Student Engagement & Activities orgs and UWave interest sessions
- Develop and implement marketing/outreach plans in collaboration with Student Media teammates, including, but not limited to: poster design, social media promotions, promotional items distribution classroom visits, info sessions, and tabling
- Partner with other Student Media Organizations (Clamor and Husky Herald) on event-planning, general Student Media programming, budget requests, and outreach/marketing and student engagement responsibilities.
- Coordinate with the Studio Engineer, Faculty Adviser(s), and faculty partners to provide service-learning opportunities with the Community-Engaged Learning & Research (CELR) classes relating back to the UWave Radio’s operational and engagement needs
- Participate in weekly Student Media team meetings and other major Student Media-specific planning and activities
Student Engagement & Activities (SEA) – Duties & Responsibilities:
Student Employee:
- Respond to and incorporate feedback from supervisor, adviser(s), and peers
- Collaborate and coordinate with other SEA orgs and campus partners
- Participate in budget tracking and co-managing organization’s finances
- Evaluate and improve the effectiveness of your work
- Develop, distribute, and analyze assessments for programs, events, and initiatives
- Assist with writing and presenting Services and Activities Fee (SAF) and Student Technology Fee (STF) budget proposals
- Assist with projects and tasks assigned by supervisor
Student Leader:
- Contribute respectfully to our diverse and inclusive work environment at UWB and the Student Engagement & Activities (SEA) department
- Contribute to the SEA mission
- Perform outreach to students about SEA programs, events, and services to promote student involvement and provide current information about campus resources
- Maintain shared work spaces with other student leaders, incl. supplies management, rotating cleaning and organizational duties, prompt reporting of issues, and more
- Maintain active, timely communication with supervisor and team
- Connect with the UW Bothell student body to find out what different students want and/or need
- Maintain documents and folders in a shared digital filing system, on a student engagement platform, social media, and other technology
- Perform clerical duties including documenting and updating processes, data entry, maintaining work calendars, and scheduling meetings
- Support and staff SEA events and operations as needed. This includes but is not limited to: New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, SEA org support, and large scale campus events
- Represent the SEA department at events and as requested by supervisor
- Support the recruitment of future student leaders during the annual hiring cycle (spring quarter)
Time Commitment:
- During the academic year, maintain approx. 15 hours a week, inclusive of all meetings, during business hours:
- Business hours are defined as 9:00am – 6:30pm, Monday – Friday
- Occasional late night or weekend hours for special events may occur
- Attend weekly team meetings: 1 hr, time varies
- Attend weekly or bi-weekly meeting with supervisor, individual team members, and advisers: 30-60 min
- Attend quarterly SEA job training
- Spring: April 5, 2024
- Winter: January 5, 2024
- Fall: September 6-26, 2023
- Summer: hours tbd, primarily for incoming returners and chairs
- Spring: Incoming team training, May 26-June 30, 2023 (actual hours tbd)
- Chairs and returners only: During the summer, work roughly 5-10 hours a week to prepare and facilitate training sessions for new student leaders and prepare for fall quarter; as determined by supervisor
Working Environment:
- In-person and on-campus (Husky Hall, Activities & Recreation Center)
- Occasional work via virtual setting via Zoom, Discord and other platforms, as needed
- Lifting boxes, supplies, and equipment up to 20lbs or heavier
- Work is completed in various set-ups (small-enclosed studio, open-concept work space, outdoors, indoors)
- Moving supplies and equipment around campus for events and work projects
Pay Rate: $18.69 per hour

Qualifications
Eligibility
- Must be a matriculated University of Washington Bothell student
- Must be enrolled in at least 6 credits as an undergraduate student or at least 4 credits as a graduate student in fall quarter
- Must be in good standing with UWB. Good standing is defined as:
- You must have a 2.5 cumulative and quarterly GPA
- You must be in good judicial standing
- Must fulfill relevant UW vaccination requirements and policies
- Available to participate in quarterly trainings – dates listed below (subject to change):
- Spring: May 26th-June 30, 2023 (specific hours tbd)
- Fall: September 6-26th, 2023
- Winter: Friday, January 5th, 2024
- Spring: Friday, April 5th, 2024
- Additional trainings, as determined by supervisor
Required Qualifications:
- Familiarity with leading a team of volunteers or peer student leaders on large projects
- Basic working knowledge of event, workshop, and/or meeting planning
- Strong interest in contributing to the mission of SEA: offering meaningful engagement to students and advocating for social justice
- Strong interest in working in a diverse team, navigating different viewpoints, and making balanced group decisions
- Strong interest in improving campus and the UWB community for students
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks, prioritize effectively, follow through on commitments, and meet deadlines
- Ability to take initiative, proactively identify problems and creative solutions, and make informed decisions
- Computer skills: ability to use email, Zoom, Canvas, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint
- Presentation skills: able to convey information in a clear, concise, and compelling way
- Research skills: able to independently find relevant, accurate information online and in person
- Written communication skills: able to convey information in a focused, coherent, and accurate way

Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated skills and experience in two or more of the following areas: management, office organization, broadcasting, media, communication, event planning, recruitment/outreach, music, and radio
- Basic working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (i.e., InDesign) and Canva
- Experience successfully working in diverse teams and environments
- Intermediate presentation skills
- Ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Excel
- Past involvement with Student Media or Student Engagement & Activities (i.e., Husky Herald reporter, Open Mic Night performer, CELR student, event volunteer, club officer)
