Position Overview:
The Husky Herald Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of The Husky Herald has leadership and editorial control of UW Bothell’s student newspaper. This position is responsible for overseeing The Husky Herald student newspaper functions and operations; this includes, but not limited to: working with the Managing Editor, Assistant Editor, and Contributors on researching, interviewing, reporting, broadcasting, video, photoshop, Adobe Creative Cloud/InDesign, article writing/editing, and publishing issues for campus, training and supporting contributors, setting the tone and direction of the publication, consistency of editorial content and policies, and the marketing/branding of The Husky Herald. The EIC has the final say on what gets published, including creating the InDesign layout before publication. This position is the primary representative of The Husky Herald in decision-making and key projects related to UWB Student Media.
The Husky Herald EIC gains: practical knowledge of journalism, elements of publishing a student newspaper, and managerial experience in running a publication team.
This position also receives valuable leadership experience in working with off-campus vendors (printers), leading meetings with other student leaders, collaborating with student groups and departments, marketing/recruiting students to join Husky Herald as contributors, and hosting events and workshops throughout the year. The EIC collaborates with Student Media team members to carry out marketing, recruitment/outreach, engagement, and host events throughout the year.
About The Husky Herald
As part of the UWB Student Media team under Student Engagement & Activities (SEA), The, Husky Herald is the campus student-run newspaper and the platform for student journalists, writers, photographers, and artists to get published. The Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor, Assistant Editor, and student writers/contributors drive the journalistic process: researching, interviewing, editing, reporting, and applying ethical practices.
Students gain professional skills while publishing a newspaper in print and digital formats (The Husky Herald website).
The Husky Herald editors mentor peers through the journalistic process, giving opportunities to learn valuable skills outside of the classroom. Students report about school events, current issues, and pop culture topics relevant to UWB students. The Husky Herald empowers students’ right to practice free speech and expression.
We are the printed voice of the student body.
Student work created as part of Student Media is professionally produced and circulated throughout the UW Bothell community.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Husky Herald & Student Newspaper Operation & Direction:
- Manages the overall function, tone, and direction of The Husky Herald student newspaper and publications, both print and digital formats (make final decisions on content to publish and response to concerns that arise; assessment and evaluation of The Husky Herald work and team; finding, reporting, and editing stories; approves publishing plans, timelines, and issue themes/beats assigned to contributors; submit for publishing through professional printer; updating The Husky Herald website and add issues digitally; and oversee print issues distribution)
- Coordinate with The Husky Herald Managing and Assistant Editors to review and edit submitted pieces (cover art, written articles, photography, infographics, multimedia works) and provide feedback to contributors prior to publication
- Submit funding requests to purchase print issues and supplies for The Husky Herald
- Write editorials and/or columns from The Husky Herald’s viewpoints on key topics, as needed
- Manage The Husky Herald equipment, request forms, and Student Media equipment storage closet maintenance in coordination with UWave Radio, Clamor Coordinator, and Marketing & Design team members
- Oversees all Husky Herald shared documents and social media/engagement accounts
- Plan weekly/bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with the Student Engagement & Activities supervisor/advisor(s), faculty advisors, and The Husky Herald editors.
- Consult with the Faculty Advisors and supervisor/advisor(s) on issues regarding journalism and The Husky Herald operations, as needed
The Husky Herald Policies & Journalism Standards
- Uphold the ethical and journalistic standards using the Associated Press Stylebook, Poynter Institute, Society of Professional Journalists, and other professional journalism resources as guides
- Lead enforcement of the The Husky Herald’s Code of Conduct, policies, and processes
Leadership & Training:
- Create and regularly update The Husky Herald staff training materials, manuals, forms, and processes in coordination with ME and AE
- Delegate projects and tasks to Managing Editor and Assistant Editor
- Support the recruitment and training of incoming The Husky Herald EIC, ME, and AE, along with general Student Media student staff, for the following year
General Student Media Programming, Engagement, & Collaboration:
- Lead the planning, facilitation, and evaluation of “Storytime with Student Media” and The Husky Herald events, workshops, and similar programs
- Support ME, AE, Faculty Advisor, and other UWB faculty to provide service-learning opportunities through the Community-Engaged Learning and Research (CELR) classes related to The Husky Herald’s operational and engagement needs
- Collaborates with fellow The Husky Herald editors and Student Media Marketing & Design Team to develop, implement, and assess marketing/outreach and engagement plans, including, but not limited to: classroom visits, faculty outreach, website updates, The Husky Herald social media, event promotions, tabling, contributor recruitment, newspaper distribution, and info sessions
- Partner with Student Media team members (Clamor, UWave Radio, Marketing & Design) on event-planning, general Student Media programming, budget requests, and outreach/marketing and student engagement responsibilities
- Participate in weekly Student Media team meetings and other major Student Media-specific planning and activities
Pay Rate:
- $19.97 per hour
- Pay rate anticipated to increase January 1st, 2025 by TBD amount
Employment Period
September 4th, 2023 – June 30th, 2024
We will make every effort to provide a reliable student employment experience. However, due to COVID-19, there is some uncertainty in university operations. We are anticipating that training will take place on site at UWB, unless public health and university policy indicates otherwise. Some terms of your employment offer – such as start date, end date, and number of weekly hours – may be subject to change over the course of the year. We will communicate such changes as early as possible.

Qualifications
In order to be eligible for this position, applicants must be:
- Committed to working in a culturally diverse environment
- Interested in contributing to the mission and goals of Student Engagement & Activities (SEA) and UWB
- A matriculated University of Washington Bothell student
- Able to commit for the entire academic year, incl. fall, winter, and spring quarters
- Enrolled in at least 6 credits as an undergraduate student or at least 4 credits as a graduate student each quarter of employment
- Able to work in person (percentage of in-person work depends on position)
- Able to participate in quarterly trainings – dates listed below (subject to change):
- Fall: September 4-30th, 2024 (this includes residential move in assistance and welcome events)
- Winter: Friday, January 3rd, 2025
- Spring: March 28th, 2025
- Additional trainings, as determined by supervisor
In good standing with UWB. Good standing is defined as:
- Must have a 2.5 cumulative and quarterly GPA
- Must be in good judicial standing (student conduct)
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating a team of staff, volunteers, OR peers on a large project
- Previous role as a student journalist, editor, reporter, and/or writer
- Familiarity with AP Style guidelines
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge and/or skills in at least two of the following: journalism, reporting, interviewing, editing, communications, writing, leadership/management, and event planning
- Previous participation in The Husky Herald or other Student Media volunteer, CELR, or paid staff opportunities
