Position Overview:
The UWave Station Manager leads the operation of UWave Radio as a media outlet and as an organization int he UW Bothell campus community. The Station Manager oversees day-to-day operation and programming of the station; they maintain the UWave Studio space, submit funding requests, lead planning of quarterly Student Media Open Mic Nights, coordinate loacal radio station tours, and collaborate with UWave Radio volunteers, contributors, and partners, while ensuring that the station follows UWB, SEA, and FCC regulations and guidelines. They are the primary UWave representative in decision making and project planning related to UWave and UWB Student Media.
This position gets hands on experience in station management, budget proposals, interviewing, reporting, broadcasting, podcasting, audio editing, using broadcasting equipment, maintaining technology, and training others how to do the same.
The Station Manager gains valuable leadership experience in wokring with campus partners, vendors, leading meetings with other student leaders, collaborating with student groups and Student Media team members, marketing, recruitment/outreach, engagement and hosting events, along with other Student Media programs, throughout the year.
About UWave Radio
As part of the UWB Student Media team under Student Engagement & Activities (SEA), the UWave Radio is the UWB’s only student-run radio station with 24/7 livestream. Through UWave, student staff receive hands on experience and training consistent with broadcast radio industry standards, software, hardware, and practices. They train and support other students (volunteers, content creators) on how to use UWave’s studio equipment. Student learn, create, and shocase their media work, host shows, and produce podcasts published on our livestream.
UWave offers students a creative outlet through radio to voice ideas, share information, perspectives, and prompt dialogue. Students gain skills in public speaking, event planning, leadership, radio hosting, podcasting, communication techniques, and get to work with equipment/technology.
Student work created as part of Student Media is professionally produced and circulated throughout the UW Bothell community.
Duties & Responsibilities
UWave & Radio Operations & Programming (40%):
- Manages day to day administrative functions of the station; organizing the UWave Studio space, submitting purchase requests, supporting the various internal focus areas (radio programming, business development, volunteer onboarding, event planning), and lead the training of volunteers, contributors, and CELR students, and those utiliizing the UWave studio and equpment
- Serve as primary point of contact and oversee communications with UWave volunteers, CELR students, other inquiries for UWave Radio, and UW Bothell adminstration
- Plan weekly one on one meetings with their supervisor, Studio Engineer, Program Director, and with Faculty Advisor (may take place biweekly)
- Work with the Studio Engineer to manage all UWave equipment, maintenance, technology checkout processes, technology/broadcasting expansion projects, and Student Technology Fee (STF) annual funding proposal
- Support the Program Director with curating, scheduling, and publishing content via the UWave Radio stream and website
- Oversees all UWave Radio social media, website, and engagement accounts
- Conduct networking and outreach with local radio stations and staff including, but not limited to, coordinating community radio tours
- Research new opportunities to expand UWave programs and operations such as conferences, studio space planning, UWave offerings, and establishing new campus partnerships
Radio Broadcasting Ethics, Regulations, & Policies (25%)
- Uphold broadcasting and radio ethics and standards in all broadcasts and operations
- Ensures the UWave Radio station follows relevant reulations and guidelines including state law and university policy, as well as federal laws including those related to radio broadcasting and copyright usage
- Collaborate with the faculty advisors and Studio Engineer when issues regarding broadcasting, technology, and radio ethics arises
- Enforce UWave Radio’s Code of Conduct and stdio policies with all participating student members, studio users, volunteers/contributors, and content published through UWave
Leadership & Training (25%)
- Lead the UWave team (Studio Engineer, Program Director, volunteers, contributors) with various task including, but not limited to making final decision on UWave operations, programming, assessment, and policy enforcement, training UWave station volunteers, student leaders, and studio users on studio and equipment use, broadcast/publishing content
- Support the recruitment and training of incoming Station Manager, Program Director, and Studio Engineer, along with other relevant Student Media staff for the following year
- Schedule and lead meetings with UWave sudetn leaders, volunteers/contributors, studio users, and interested potential UWave members
- Quarterly review and update the UWave Handbook/Operations Manual, Programmer Agreements, and other studio and programming forms and guidelines
Student Media Programming, Engagement & Collaboration (10%)
- Lead the planning, faciliation, and evaluation of Student Media Open Mic Nights and UWave events, workshops, and other programs including concert collaborations with clubs or Student Engagement & Activities orgs and UWave interest sessions
- Develop and implement marketing/outreach plans in collaboration with Student Media teammates including but not limited to poster design, social media promotions, promotional items distribution, classroom visits, info sessions, and tabling
- Partner with other Student Media organizations (Clamor, Husky Herald, Marketing & Design) on event planning, general Student Media programming, budget requets, and outreach/marketing and student engagement responsibilities
- Coordinate with team members, Faculty Advisor, and faculty partners to provide service learning opportunities with the Community-Engaged Learning & Research (CELR) classes related to UWave Radio’s operational and engagement needs
- Particpate in weekly Student Media team meetings and other major Student Media specific planning and activities
Pay Rate:
- $19.97 per hour
- Pay rate anticipated to increase January 1st, 2025 by TBD amount
Employment Period
September 4th, 2023 – June 30th, 2024
We will make every effort to provide a reliable student employment experience. However, due to COVID-19, there is some uncertainty in university operations. We are anticipating that training will take place on site at UWB, unless public health and university policy indicates otherwise. Some terms of your employment offer – such as start date, end date, and number of weekly hours – may be subject to change over the course of the year. Qualifications
In order to be eligible for this position, applicants must be:
- Committed to working in a culturally diverse environment
- Interested in contributing to the mission and goals of Student Engagement & Activities (SEA) and UWB
- A matriculated University of Washington Bothell student
- Able to commit for the entire academic year, incl. fall, winter, and spring quarters
- Enrolled in at least 6 credits as an undergraduate student or at least 4 credits as a graduate student each quarter of employment
- Able to work in person (percentage of in-person work depends on position)
- Able to participate in quarterly trainings – dates listed below (subject to change):
- Fall: September 4-30th, 2024 (this includes residential move in assistance and welcome events)
- Winter: Friday, January 3rd, 2025
- Spring: March 28th, 2025
- Additional trainings, as determined by supervisor
In good standing with UWB. Good standing is defined as:
- Must have a 2.5 cumulative and quarterly GPA
- Must be in good judicial standing (student conduct)
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in leading a team of volunteers or peer student leaders on large projects
- Basic working knowledge of event, workshop, and/or meeting planning
- Strong interest in contributing to the mission of SEA: offering meaningful engagement to students and advocating for social justice
- Strong interest in working in a diverse team, navigating different viewpoints, and making balanced group decisions
- Strong interest in improving campus and the UWB community for students
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks, prioritize effectively, follow through on commitments, and meet deadlines
- Ability to take initiative, proactively identify problems and creative solutions, and make informed decisions
- Computer skills: ability to use email, Zoom, Canvas, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint
- Presentation skills: able to convey information in a clear, concise, and compelling way
- Research skills: able to independently find relevant, accurate information online and in person
- Written communication skills: able to convey information in a focused, coherent, and accurate way
- Collaboration experience (class project, work experience, personal)
- Demonstrated ability to hear and consider different perspectives
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated skills and experience in two or more of the following areas: management, office organization, broadcasting, media, communication, event planning, recruitment/outreach, music, and radio
- Basic working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (i.e., InDesign) and Canva
- Experience successfully working in diverse teams and environments
- Intermediate presentation skills
- Ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Excel
- Past involvement with Student Media or Student Engagement & Activities (i.e., Husky Herald reporter, Open Mic Night performer, CELR student, event volunteer, club officer)
