Position Title: Student Educator & Activities Leader (SEALs)
Location: ARC, NEST Gear Shop and various off-campus locations
Pay Rate: $19.97
Outdoor Wellness Program Mission: The OW program’s mission is to provide strategic and intentional programming designed to diminish barriers to entry, create more inclusive outdoor recreation communities and develop skills for healthy and responsible participation in outdoor activities while addressing the nine dimensions of wellness.
Position Overview: Student Educator and Activity Leaders (SEALs) fill a vital leadership role on campus. SEALs will co-create, plan, and facilitate on-campus outdoor and wellness programs and events for the UWB/CC student body that appeal to a wide array of ages, genders, ethnicities, and interests. SEALs will receive significant training on program planning and facilitation, outdoor gear handling and use, outdoor activity instruction, marketing strategies, client management, and community/partner building. All Student Educator and Activity Leaders (SEALs) will be trained in CPR/AED, First Aid and attend other outdoor education training as needed. (SEALs) may also receive funding to further advance their own development in something related to the program. Additionally, SEALs will have the opportunity to progress to an Outdoor Wellness Leader role which will allow them to lead off-campus events and programming, and receive further first aid/leadership training opportunities* (Must receive approval from Program Manager and all pre-requisites must be met).
Please note, Student Educator and Activity Leaders will be hired on for an initial probationary period where their employment will be contingent on having a good standing with UWB/CC, meeting the minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5 and maintaining the minimum quarterly GPA of 2.5, fulfilling the responsibilities of a SEAL on a consistent basis, and displaying a commitment to improving the Outdoor Wellness Program and oneself as a leader.
Being a Student Educator and Activity Leader requires a time commitment of a full academic year and an average of 8-10 hours per week. That time is used to plan, market, and facilitate campus adventures and clean and repair outdoor equipment in the Nest Gear Shop.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a minimum 8 hours of work a week during the academic year.
- Attend and/or complete Core Skills Training in Summer/Fall and any other mandatory trainings throughout the year (SEALs will be paid for trainings) including, but not limited to:
- All ARC Staff Trainings
- University-wide staff and student trainings
- Outdoor Leadership/Medical trainings (ex. CPR/AED/First Aid)
- Assist operating and managing the Nest Gear Shop, including checking in/out gear for students, cleaning and putting away returned gear, repairing damaged gear, and answering inquiries about the Gear Shop and Outdoor Wellness Program in person, over the phone, and on social media.
- Attend weekly team meetings.
- Coordinate with the Program Manager, Student coordinator an other team members to assess and improve programs for the campus community.
- Participate in required outdoor leadership trainings including CPR/AED/First Aid and other outdoor education trainings when deemed necessary.
- Actively seek input from the student body to determine the type of events to plan throughout the year.
- Co-create, -plan, and -facilitate a diversity of outdoor and wellness related campus events for the UWB/CC student body that appeal to a wide array of ages, genders, ethnicities, and interests.
- Complete required trip planning documents and tasks in a timely manner.
- Create marketing materials and assist in advertising events to reach a diverse demographic of students/staff/faculty/community members etc.
- Foster a safe, accessible, and inclusive space where the pursuit of responsible outdoor recreation is encouraged for all.
- Work collaboratively with fellow SEALs and OWLs to support and drive the mission of the Outdoor Wellness Program.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled student at Cascadia College or UW Bothell; taking a minimum of 6 credits in Fall quarter 2024
- Must be able to comfortably lift 35lbs.
- The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- Frequently spends time on mixed terrain in all weather conditions.
- Works 30-50% of time in stationery or seated positions.
- Must be enrolled and maintain enrollment with a minimum of 6 credits per quarter throughout the 2024-25 academic year
- Must have and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA during the time of application and throughout the entire duration of employment.
- Must maintain a quarterly GPA of 2.5
- In good standing with the University of Washington Bothell/Cascadia College.
- Able to attend and/or complete Core Skills Training in Summer/Fall and any other mandatory trainings throughout the year listed above (See Responsibilities section).
- Eligible for employment in the U.S. at the time of hiring.
- Capacity to adhere to a variable work schedule

- Prior experience with event or program planning.
Additional Information:
• The application for this position closes on May2, 2024.
• Interviews will take place May 7,8,9 and May 14,15,16, 2024.
• Employment for this position is dependent on availability for Summer Quarter.
• Shifts may include early morning, evening, and weekend hours.
• Attendance at all staff training and quarterly meetings is required.
• ARC staff must not exceed 19 hours a week.
• ARC staff must obtain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification. This will be provided by the ARC if hired.
