The Restoration Intern works in a team setting under the supervision of the Recreation and Cultural Services Manager and Restoration Specialist to provide support and contribute to a variety of projects aimed at preserving natural landscape restoration, including tree maintenance, plant installation and care. Site maintenance, and noxious plant control. All work must ensure safety, integrity, cleanliness and aesthetic appeal, as well as meet customer needs and City standards.
Works up to 32 hours a week. Hours vary on an “as-needed” basis and may include split shifts, weekends, evenings, and/or holidays.
Pay is $20 – $25 per hour, depending upon experience. This position is hybrid, telework eligible.

- Assists restoration specialists in carrying out various restoration projects including weeding, watering and other horticultural activities; herbicide application (spraying, swabbing and injection).
- Learns and applies proper techniques for handling, cleaning, and preserving different types of planting materials.
- Assists with recruitment of volunteers.
- Assists and facilitates training for volunteers and leads volunteer events.
- Supports and works with a wide variety of community groups on volunteer work projects.
- Assists in developing and/or maintaining cooperative efforts and relationships with public and private agencies, organizations, associations, and groups.
- Serves as a site or event coordinator for various special events, activities, and programs.
- Adheres to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others.
- Navigating off-trail in forested backcountry settings to evaluate plant cover and conduct invasive plant control.
- Attends staff meetings and other meetings as instructed.
- Checks reports, records, and other data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established standards; compiles information and prepares routine reports.
- Maintains a variety of records and files according to established procedures, creates and maintains project files, monitors project progress to assure required steps and documentation are completed, and processes a variety of forms and reports.
- Provides quality customer service.
- Oversees the use, care, and inventory of City supplies.
- Opens and secures the facilities as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant academic program (e.g., historic preservation, conservation, art history, architecture, archaeology, etc.) Strong interest in preservation and restoration, with a desire to gain practical experience in the field. Basic knowledge of restoration principles, materials, and techniques is preferred but not required.
Employees must be residents of Washington State.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Current First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain certifications prior to starting work.
May be required to possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Pacific Northwest plant identification. Habitat restoration experience. Noxious weed management, and event facilitation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 20 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, fumes, temperature, weather, and noise extremes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
