The Recreation Intern works in a team setting under the supervision of the Recreation and Cultural Services Manager and Recreation Supervisor to provide varied support services to outdoor community events, art commission programs, camps, rentals, and aquatics. The work requires excellent communication and customer service skills due to considerable public contact.
Hours vary on an “as-needed” basis and will fluctuate between 7 to 40 hours a week. May work non-standard workweeks and shifts to include split shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
Pay is $20 – $25 per hour, depending upon experience. This remote is hybrid, telework eligible.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Serves as a site or event coordinator for various special events, activities, and programs.
- Assists in specific recreation program areas such as camps, classes, or special events.
- Assists with reports, statistics, budgets, and evaluation of camps, classes, and events.
- Supports the development of marketing materials to promote recreational programs and events.
- Attends staff meetings and other meetings as instructed.
- Collaborates with staff to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants.
- Provide excellent customer service to participants, volunteers, and staff.
- Oversees the use, care, and inventory of City supplies.
- Assist with administrative tasks as needed, including answering phone calls and responding to emails.
- Assist in the setup and breakdown of recreational events and activities.
- Contribute creative ideas for enhancing existing programs and developing new initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a degree program in Recreation Management, Sports Management, Hospitality, or a related field. Passion for recreation and a desire to gain hands-on experience in the field.
Employees must be residents of Washington State.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Current First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain certifications prior to starting work. May be required to possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 20 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks are regularly performed inside and outside with exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, fumes, temperature, weather, and noise extremes).
This position works indoors and outdoors with a wide variety of age groups from preschool through senior citizens in a variety of recreational activities. Must be able to physically play and demonstrate games, work with arts and craft materials, work outdoors for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather conditions, and be able to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
