Many Paths Can Lead to a Successful Future
Going into the UW I was dead set on becoming a mechanical engineer. However, trying to survive an online freshman year and taking a ton of gen eds led to changing my mind several times. Finally, in my sophomore year, I applied and made it into the Architectural Design major. This major than led to the dual major Construction Management program which added a fifth year to my college career, but was completely worth it. Construction was never something that I thought I would want to pursue but now I plan for it to be my life long career. There is power in knowing what you want from the beginning, but trying to pursue a strict path means you might miss other adventures along the way. The twists and turns of my degree path helped me to make strong networking connections across multiple fields and led to some of my strongest friendships. My advice is to have a goal in mind but know that it is okay to change and pivot, the new path might be the one that will make you the happiest. If I had never let myself be open minded to alternative majors and an additional year of college I would not be as excited as I am to start my life post college.
