Job Title: Student Assistant Systems and Software Engineer – Generative AI & Python
Location: UW Seattle Main Campus – UW-IT INF AI
Compensation: UW Student Assistant level 1 or 2 hourly. 19.5 hours per week is expected.
Duration: Month-to-month, but with an expectation of at least a six month commitment and preferably longer. Needed through summer and beyond.
About the Opportunity
We are seeking motivated and talented student engineers and Python developers for AI initiatives at UW-IT. This is an opportunity to work closely with key leaders on critical projects involving the development of AI technologies. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting various software development and implementation tasks with innovative platforms that facilitate the responsible use of AI systems, as well as common SaaS and cloud AI platform services, at UW.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
• Contribute to cutting-edge AI-driven projects, including agentic AI systems that deliver real work at scale
• Collaborate with leadership on automation, experimentation, and feature ideation.
• Deliver live demos and provide regular progress reports to leaders.
• Build a fantastic work portfolio and resume content by delivering bleeding-edge results in the most important sector at its defining moment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Software Development & Testing
• Desired: Write, maintain, and optimize software using Python and related technologies.
• Conduct functional and performance testing. Document everything meticulously.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve issues promptly. Communicate constantly.
2. AI Prompt Engineering & Experimentation
• Develop generative AI prompts and solutions.
• Experiment with CrewAI to build and operate multi-agent AI systems.
• Explore new AI-driven features for creative projects.
3. System Operations & Automation
• Desired: Work in Azure environments, utilizing scripting, automation, and command-line tools.
• Ensure efficient deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of AI systems.
• Assist with daily operation of the AI team support queue in UW Connect (ServiceNow)
• Assist with daily operation of the UW AI Community of Practice
4. Collaboration & Reporting
• Communicate progress and challenges through regular updates to leadership.
• Participate in brainstorming sessions, offering new ideas for feature implementation.
• Prepare and deliver live demos showcasing system capabilities.
Required Qualifications
• Current or Recent Student Status at the University of Washington (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD).
• Familiarity with generative AI concepts and prompt engineering.
• Strong Work Ethic & Professionalism; ability to solve complex problems with minimal guidance and supervision
• Exceptional organizational skills, reliability, and ability to meet deadlines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Three professional references required, including at least one prior supervisor who can attest to your work ethic, reliability, and technical capabilities.
