Position Description:
The Department of Child, Family, & Population Health Nursing has an outstanding opportunity for a Student Assistant/Subject Recruiter Assistant temporary hourly position. This appointment is for 12 months, with the opportunity for renewal, and will begin at the convenience of the employer and the employee.
Working in a research team under the leadership of the Principal Investigator and the Project Director, the Student Assistant/Subject Recruiter Assistant will be an integral member of the research study team in recruiting participants for a new NIH-funded randomized controlled trial (RCT). The RCT will leverage an established treatment program to target childhood obesity (vs. control) in 240 prepubertal girls who are at risk for earlier pubertal onset based on BMI percentile ≥85th and low family income, both factors linked to earlier pubertal onset. Findings will inform the value and optimal timing of such interventions, including whether implementation in the prepubertal period may be most impactful due to the combined benefits of weight loss along with a reduction in risk for earlier pubertal onset and its sequelae.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain recruitment and tracking procedures of a primarily low-income, racially diverse sample of prepubertal girls and their families. This includes performing phone screens and scheduling study visits as well as performing other miscellaneous recruitment and tracking tasks.
Conduct sample recruitment and tracking (100%)
- Implement and maintain subject recruitment protocols. This includes performing outreach activities by phone, text, email, and direct mail and by distributing study materials in targeted community locations and on targeted websites, social media, and research registries. .
- Administer screening questions to determine eligibility and recruit into study.
- Communicate with potential study families to explain the study, answer questions, and solve problems.
- Monitor, identify, and enact re-engagement with families at risk of dropping out of the study.
- Implement strategies for sample retention.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or other research-related field relevant to the study (e.g., nursing, pre-med, public health, health psychology, epidemiology).
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-based research environment and engage effectively with individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
- Strong communication skills on the phone and confidence conducting recruitment and screening calls, including the ability to clearly convey study information and build rapport with prospective participants and families.
- Experience working with diverse families and children in the context of health and health disparities research.
- Proficiency with research and data management platforms such as REDCap and SharePoint.
- Completion of required Human Subjects/CITI training and demonstrated commitment to maintaining confidentiality of participant identities and records.
Working Conditions:
- Availability to work weekdays with flexibility to work evenings and weekends when needed to accommodate participant scheduling needs.
