About the Position
The Washington Bus Campus Leads position is a stipended position that spans over the course of 8 weeks. Its primary goal is to get out the vote on your college campus! With the support of Bus staff, training, and resources, you will be working with a small team of students on your campus to organize strategies to register voters and collect pledge to vote cards. The timeline of the position will start on September 11th at the Student Organizing and Leadership Summit (SOLS) and will end on November 5th, two days after the General Election. There will also be a celebration sometime after the election to thank you for all your hard work and electoral wins!
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Learn the basics of electoral organizing and voter mobilization directly from the Bus’s organizing staff.
- Join the Bus community and get connected with WA state’s largest youth-led political movement!
- Work collaboratively with your cohort of Campus Leads (between 3-5 students based on campus) and the Bus Campus Organizer to complete Pledge to Vote (PTV) and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) goals for the Washington Bus’s Campus Voter Project program.
- Educate voters and prompt discussion around ballot measures such as the millionaire’s tax, trans student rights, and cost-free college.
- Innovate new strategies for voter engagement and mobilization specific to your campus.
- Recruit volunteers and expand the Bus’s youth voter base by forming lasting connections with fellow students.
Your Typical Week
1-2 Hours: Meet with your cohort and the Campus Organizer to brainstorm, strategize, and plan weekly actions and goals.
2-4 Hours: Engage students on your campus in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: tabling, canvassing, presentations, large and small events, phone banking, and text banking.
Qualifications for Success
While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications below, our ideal candidate will bring:
- Interest in working at the Washington Bus and passionate about its mission.
- General experience managing projects, processes, and/or systems in a small team environment.
- High level of organization, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Special consideration given to candidates with previous experience working on electoral and issue campaigns, voter registration and engagement, and in-person organizing events.
Compensation
The compensation is a $600 Stipend for 5 hours of work a week for 8 weeks. This role is an entry-level volunteer internship.
Campus Leads will be paid bi-weekly (~$100-$150)
Location & Work Requirements
Hybrid Work: All of the work you will be doing will be in a hybrid modality, meaning that work will be completed in person and virtually. All in-person work will be done on your campus, with at least one weekly meeting virtually. Events can also be in a hybrid modality as well depending on what is being planned by your specific cohort.
Travel Requirements: This position will not require frequent travel, as we will keep all work centralized to your specific campus and its surrounding area. The only time you’ll be asked to travel for work will be for the Student Organizing and Leadership Summit at the Evergreen State College in Olympia from September 11th – September 13th. This event will be the start of the internship.
Location Requirement: Consideration will be given to applicants who live in or within traveling distance of our target campuses.
Evening & Weekend Work: This position will require some weekend work.
Physical Demands: This position will require a mix of being on a computer for sending emails, taking calls, inputting data, and attending virtual meetings, as well as on the field around campus, tabling or canvassing at events, etc. This job will occasionally require lifting and moving objects of no more than 25 lbs.
