Position Summary
Serve as an environmental educator, science communicator and media intern for the Ocean Alaska Science and Learning Center in Seward, Alaska.
This 13-week internship works with the National Park Service’s Ocean Alaska Science and Learning Center (OASLC). The OASLC is made up of a small team who work across eleven coastal National Parks in Alaska but are based out of the Kenai Fjords National Park headquarters in Seward, Alaska. We provide programming, create education and science communication outreach materials, and help fund scientific research in Alaska’s coastal parks.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The primary duties of this position will include providing educational programming to local student audiences, creating outreach materials about scientific research in the parks and assisting on 1 or 2 field-based scientific research projects. This intern will work with partners to co-lead 4 weeks of Coastal Connections Camps for local Alaska 9–12-year-old youth. This camp includes field-based experiences like kayaking and hiking. The intern will also be responsible for creating outreach content such as social media posts and web-based materials, as well as collecting photographs and video content and helping with OASLC photograph cataloging.
Required Qualifications
This position includes a mixture of office-based work, field experience and hands-on education work. There is potential for some backcountry travel on a liveaboard boat to participate in research in the parks. A successful candidate will be excited about science, non-formal education, and visual media. They will be open to new experiences and have a good attitude about living in a small town surrounded by stunning mountains that are sometimes not visible for days due to rain.
At times, this position requires working in rugged outdoor settings in potentially inclement weather and challenging field conditions. This may involve strenuous hiking and overnight camping in the backcountry without running water and out of cell range and internet service. Work schedule will be flexible and may involve working longer than 8 hours days or weekends as projects require. Any time over 40 hours in a week with be compensated with time off.
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Living Accommodations
This intern will be provided their own bedroom in a shared three-bedroom apartment within the town of Seward, AK. Park service bikes are available to borrow, and the apartment is within walking distance (approx. 1 mile) to the nearest grocery store and their park service office building.
Seward, Alaska is a small coastal town nestled between the mountains and Resurrection Bay in South-Central Alaska. Seward boarders Kenai Fjords National Park and is a 2.5-hour drive south of Anchorage and Ted Stevens International Airport. Seward’s amenities include two grocery stores, a variety of restaurants, and access to rugged and rewarding outdoor activities.
Compensation
$600/week living allowance
$1,500 one-time roundtrip travel stipend
$500 duty-related reimbursements (for gear and in-season travel)
AmeriCorps and Public Land Corps Hiring Authority eligible
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
