TITLE: American Indian Student Commission Director

JOB SUMMARY:
The American Indian Student Commission Director is responsible for the overall administration of the American Indian Student Commission, its budget, policy goals, coordination and implementation of programming, and day-to-day activities. The AISC Director is responsible for monitoring and forming the policy of the American Indian Student Commission. The AISC Director is responsible for the creation and implementation of events and activities for students, as well as hiring, onboarding, and working with interns and volunteers. The AISC Director is responsible to the Board of Directors as a representative of the commission and represents the interests of the American Indian student organizations, issues, and cultures.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Act as a representative and advocate on behalf of issues and concerns of American Indian and Alaska Native students and against all forms of oppression on campus and in the community.
- Serve as liaison to American Indian organizations on campus and in the community.
- Serve as the American Indian Student Commission Senator in Student Senate or assign a proxy.
- Serve as a member of the wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ Student Advisory Board (WSAB).
- Create and adapt programming that fosters a positive and anti-oppressive atmosphere so it is appealing, relevant, and successfully draws membership from all portions of the American Indian community and campus at large. Oversee the coordination, planning, promotion, and implementation of all programs and activities of the commission, including special events, workshops, lectures, discussion groups, etc.
- Inform students of services available on campus (including the ASUW services) and maintain strong communication with all American Indian and Alaska Native constituents. Be aware of the needs of undergraduate and graduate student organizations.
- Responsible for recruitment, supervision, and monitoring of volunteers or interns to assist in program development and implementation.
- Communicate effectively with constituents outside of RSOs.
- Forward all reports given to the ASUW concerning the commission to American Indian constituents. Advise the ASUW President on issues of diversity and commission status. Report to and update the Director of Diversity Efforts on a weekly basis. Maintain a good working relationship with the ASUW, its commissions, and other agencies.
- Attend Joint Commission Committee Meetings in order to foster better communication, coalition, and coordination with other ASUW commissions.
- Maintain strong communication with the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMAD), which includes attending the weekly Student Advisory Board meetings.
- Responsible for web page upkeep through working with the ASUW Webmasters, through volunteers or otherwise.
- Oversee expenditures of the annual budget and maintain financial records.
- Attend Native American Advisory Board meetings (or assign a proxy).
- Initiate all necessary paperwork for operating the commission, according to established procedures and timelines. Maintains, organizes, and updates office files and records.
- Establish and attend 2 office hours a week, some of which are allowed to be held outside the Husky Union Building with the prior approval of the ASUW Personnel Director in order to provide outreach to the commission’s community. Advertisement of hours must be given at both the Husky Union Building as well as the outreach location.
- Monitor national, state, tribal, and local policy and legislation that could have potential impacts on American Indian and Alaska Native students on campus. Monitor ASUW Student Senate legislation that could have potential impacts on American Indian and Alaska Native students on campus.
- prepare and submit quarterly reports detailing activities, budget status and problems/suggestions according to the procedure set by the Director of Internal Policy and Personnel Director.
- Maintain and inform the ASUW Personnel Director and the Student Activities Office (SAO) adviser of all completed and missed office hours, including any absences due to sickness, personal emergencies or work-related trips.
- Meet with SAO adviser as needed and upon request, as well as participating in a quarterly evaluation process.
- Attend ASUW mandatory training sessions and staff meetings, including but not limited to ASUW Personnel meetings and ASUW Autumn Orientation.
- Review and adhere to conditions of employment as stated in the ASUW Personnel Policy, the signed ASUW Employment Contract and the Student Employment Handbooks. All actions must also follow the laws and procedures set by ASUW, SAO and the State of Washington.
- Responsible for initiating a thorough transition with your newly hired successor during the last week of the term; including the completion of comprehensive transition documents, that are uploaded to the ASUW transition page before the last day of Spring Quarter.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with and awareness of issues and concerns of American Indian students on campus and in the community.
- Demonstrate administrative and supervisory ability.
- Ability to develop and adhere to a budget and maintain records.
- Ability to communicate well with students, administrators and faculty.
- Awareness of on and off-campus resources.
- Publicity and promotional skills.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and implement cultural and educational programs/services.
- Ability to formulate culturally relevant policies.
Must be a UW student enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate or 4 graduate credits or on leave as defined by Executive Order 50.
