Stop the Bleed : Medical Experience Volunteer Event – due 2/13

Have you ever wondered what you could do in the first few minutes of a medical emergency—before EMS arrives?

Stop the Bleed (STB) is a national initiative of the American College of Surgeons that teaches everyday people how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and take immediate action using simple, effective techniques like tourniquets, wound packing, and direct pressure. These skills save lives—and uncontrolled bleeding remains the number one preventable cause of death after trauma. At the University of Washington, our Stop the Bleed branch works closely with Harborview Medical Center, Trauma Surgery, and Emergency Management to bring this training to community members across the Greater Seattle area, including schools and youth organizations. Young people are disproportionately affected by traumatic bleeding, and in many emergencies, bystanders are the only help available in the first critical moments.

They are now recruiting for Stop the Bleed Application Skills Volunteers! As a volunteer, you will:

  • Be trained by UW medical students on the Stop the Bleed curriculum
  • Teach hands-on bleeding control skills in small groups
  • Work alongside medical students
  • Help empower community members with skills that can mean the difference between life and death

No prior Stop the Bleed experience or clinical background is required — all volunteers receive full training before teaching, and the time commitment is flexible and designed to fit busy schedules. We are also offering a limited number of FULLY REMOTE ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT ROLES.

Why get involved?

  • Gain meaningful clinical and service experience
  • Develop teaching, leadership, and communication skills
  • Make a direct, tangible impact in your community
  • Learn trauma response skills taught to medical professionals
  • Strengthen your medical school application through service-learning

If you’re passionate about medicine, community service, and learning practical skills that matter now, we would love to have you join our team.

👉 Apply to become a Stop the Bleed volunteer: Application Link Applicantions accepted on a rolling basis, but the priority deadline is February 13th.
