As your final days at your internship approach, it’s time to think about how to wrap things up on a high note. A strong finish can leave a lasting impression and may lead to an offer of return or even a full-time job after graduation. Here are some tips to help you close out your experience in a meaningful and professional way.
1. Reflect on Your Journey
Take some time to reflect on everything you’ve learned and accomplished. What skills have you gained? What projects are you most proud of? It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks, but looking back will help you see just how much you’ve grown. Consider using our After Internship – Next Steps handout to determine additional ways to build your career pathway as you return to campus.
2. Thank Your Team
Write personalized thank-you notes to those who helped you along the way—whether it’s your supervisor, coworkers, or even another intern on your team. If possible, thank them in person and highlight something specific they did that made your internship more meaningful. A little appreciation goes a long way!
3. Ask for Feedback
Before you leave, schedule a meeting with your supervisor to ask for feedback. This is a perfect time to hear about areas where you did well and any skills you could improve. Be open to constructive criticism—it’s part of the learning process! We encourage you to use the NACE Career Readiness Competencies Assessment to structure the feedback.
4. Stay Connected
Your internship may be ending, but your relationship with your coworkers doesn’t have to. Add your team on LinkedIn or exchange contact information. Send a follow-up message a few weeks after you’ve left, thanking them again and sharing an update on what you’re up to. Networking is all about maintaining relationships, and you never know when a connection might come in handy down the road.
5. Wrap Up Projects
Before your last day, make sure all your work is in order. Organize your files, leave clear instructions if someone else will be taking over, and wrap up any loose ends. If you can’t complete a task before you leave, document what you’ve done so far and suggest next steps for the team. This shows professionalism and that you care about the quality of your work—even as you’re walking out the door.
6. Celebrate Your Growth
Lastly, celebrate yourself! Internships are a key stepping stone in your career journey, and you’ve made it through with new knowledge and experiences under your belt. Take pride in your growth, and use the lessons learned as you move forward.
As you close this chapter, remember that every experience, big or small, is part of your larger story. Leaving on a positive note ensures that you walk away with new skills, stronger connections, and fond memories. We look forward to seeing you on campus in a few weeks!
