Internship Corner – Making a Lasting Impression

Internships are a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience, learn about your industry, and build a network. But how do you make the leap from being an intern to securing a full-time job? Here are some tips to help you make a lasting impression and turn your internship into a career opportunity.

1. Show Enthusiasm

Your attitude can make a big difference in how you’re perceived. Approach your tasks with enthusiasm, show a willingness to learn, and maintain a positive outlook. Your energy and eagerness will not go unnoticed and can set you apart from other interns.

2. Deliver Quality Work

Consistently producing high-quality work is one of the best ways to make a lasting impression. Pay attention to detail, meet deadlines, and strive for excellence in everything you do. Show that you can be relied upon to handle responsibilities effectively and efficiently.

3. Seek Feedback and Improve

Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from your supervisors and colleagues. Constructive criticism is invaluable for your growth. Use the feedback you receive to improve your performance.

4. Build Relationships

Networking is key. Take the time to get to know your colleagues, participate in team activities, and be approachable. Building strong relationships can create advocates for you within the company. These connections can be crucial when it’s time to consider full-time positions.

5. Take Initiative

Show that you’re proactive by volunteering for additional tasks or projects (if there are any you are interested in). If you see an area where you can contribute, step up and offer your help. Taking initiative shows that you’re motivated and willing to go above and beyond what’s expected.

6. Understand the Company Culture

Every organization has its unique culture. Pay attention to the values, norms, and behaviors that are important in your workplace. If you received an overview in your onboarding, take the time to identify how the organization sees itself and what they value among their employees.

7. Communicate Effectively

Good communication is crucial in any job. Make sure to keep your supervisors updated on your progress, ask questions when needed, and express your ideas clearly. Effective communication shows that you’re engaged and helps build trust with your team.

8. Show Your Impact

Make sure that your contributions are visible. Consider using a journal or a spreadsheet with dates and key projects you work on over the course of your internship. Keep track of your accomplishments and be prepared to share them. When the time comes to discuss your future with the company, you want to be able to clearly articulate the impact you’ve had during your internship.

9. Express Your Interest

Don’t assume that your supervisors know you’re interested in returning next summer or are looking for a full-time position. Have a conversation with your manager or HR representative to express your interest. Ask about the hiring process and what steps you need to take to be considered for a full-time role.

10. Stay Connected

Even if your internship doesn’t immediately lead to a full-time job, stay in touch with the people you’ve met. Connect with colleagues on LinkedIn, send occasional updates on your career progress, and keep an eye out for future opportunities within the company.
