Internship Corner – Summer Check-in, How Goes the Internship?

Whether you’re just starting or you’ve been at it for a while, it’s super important to check in with your supervisor and ask for feedback. Not only does this show your dedication, but it also helps you grow and make the most of your internship experience. Here’s a guide on how to do just that:

1. Schedule a Meeting

Timing is everything! Don’t wait until the last minute to ask for feedback. Instead, find a time that works well for both you and your supervisor. Ideally, you are already having regular meetings with your supervisor, but sending a quick email to set up a meeting shows that you respect their time and are proactive about your growth.

2. Come Prepared

Before the meeting, take some time to reflect on your work using our check-in template. What have you accomplished? What challenges have you faced? Are there specific areas where you’d like feedback? Coming prepared with questions and points for discussion shows that you’re serious about your development.

3. Be Open and Receptive

During the meeting, keep an open mind. Feedback can be both positive and constructive, and both are incredibly valuable. Listen carefully, take notes if needed, and ask clarifying questions. Remember, this is a learning experience, and your supervisor is there to help you succeed.

4. Set Goals

After receiving feedback, discuss actionable steps and set goals for improvement. Compare them to the initial goals you set at the start of your internship. This could be anything from learning a new skill, improving your time management, or contributing more to team projects. Having clear goals helps you stay focused and shows your supervisor that you’re committed to growing.

5. Follow Up

Don’t let the conversation end with the meeting. Follow up on the feedback you received by showing progress in the areas discussed. Regular check-ins can be helpful, so consider setting up another meeting in a few weeks to review your progress and get more feedback.

Asking for feedback and checking in with your supervisor might seem a bit daunting at first, but it’s a crucial part of your internship journey. Embrace the opportunity to learn and grow, and don’t be afraid to reach out!
