DO-IT STEM student mentoring program

The DO-IT Center at the University of Washington that works to increase the representation of students with disabilities in STEM careers; one of those projects is The Alliance for Students with Disabilities for Inclusion, Networking, and Transition Opportunities in STEMย (TAPDINTO-STEM). As a part of the TAPDINTO-STEM project, they are looking to recruit up to 8 students majoring in STEM disciplines for a unique mentoring program, to be facilitated by UW faculty. I am writing to ask if you would be willing to share the information below with UW students in your network

The Alliance for Students with Disabilities for Inclusion, Networking, and Transition Opportunities in STEM (TAPDINTO-STEM)ย has two tracks for students:

๐Ÿญ. ย ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—•๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ: This program is for freshmen and sophomores who plan to obtain a bachelorโ€™s degree in STEM disciplines. The goal for students in this program is to transition into the Bridge to Post-Baccalaureate Program. Participants in the Bridge to Baccalaureate program will each receive a $1000 stipend per academic year (Sept-June) for a one-year commitment. Participants must reapply each year.

๐Ÿฎ. ย ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜-๐—•๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ: This program is for juniors and seniors who are pursuing a bachelorโ€™s degree in STEM disciplines.ย  The goal for students in this program is to transition into Graduate School or the STEM workforce. Participants in the Bridge to Post-Baccalaureate program will each receive a $1000 stipend per academic year (Sept-June) for a one-year commitment. Participants must reapply each year.

In addition to the financial stipends, participants will receive:
โ€ข Peer mentoring and faculty mentoring on your local campus
โ€ข Access to a national network of students, graduate students, faculty and industry mentors interested in supporting students with disabilities pursuing STEM degrees
โ€ข Opportunities to apply for internships and research and industry conferences
โ€ข Opportunities to participate in campus events and programs such as campus graduate school fairs
โ€ข An Alliance-wide annual STEM student research conference
โ€ข Group meetings with faculty and guest speakers focusing on topics such as time management, study skills, course selection, internships, and research opportunities

To be eligible for the Bridge programs, an applicant must:
โ€ข Be a student with a disability enrolled at one of the partner institutions listed above.ย Enrollment with the student disability services office is not a requirement.

  • Be a STEM major or be a freshman/sophomore planning to declare a STEM major and interested in exploring graduate school options
    โ€ข Be a U.S. Citizen, a national, or a lawfully admitted permanent resident with a documented qualifying condition (see application for types of conditions)
    โ€ข Committed to achieving and maintaining a 3.00 cumulative GPA
    โ€ข 18 years of age or older

    Bridge participants must:
    โ€ข Make progress toward, or maintaining a 3.00 cumulative GPA
    โ€ข Participate in mentoring activities to the satisfaction of your TAPDINTO-STEM faculty mentor
    โ€ข Participate in enrichment activities such as time-management, study-skills, and tutoring workshops and professional or association meetings
    โ€ข Continue to pursue a degree in a STEM discipline
