Dr. Q: From the Fields of California to Chief of Neurosurgery

Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, commonly known as Dr. Q, came to the United States as at the age of 19 undocumented and unable to speak English.  He first started working as a farmhand in California’s Central Valley where he saved enough money to take English classes at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA.

He subsequently discovered his love for science and transferred to the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated with highest honors. Dr. Q received his medical degree on full scholarship from Harvard University.

Today, he is the “William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professor” and Chair of Neurologic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Q is an internationally renowned neurosurgeon and the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Recently, his story was featured on Netflix’s “The Surgeon’s Cut”.
