Game devs across the industry are overworked and underpaid, often putting in unspeakable hours to meet an unrealistic deadline, all for the benefit of those in leadership positions. This constant strain and consistent “crunch culture” leads to the average games career lasting 5–10 years.
When we come together, we can collectively bargain for better working conditions, better pay, and reasonable hours, all resulting in an overall improvement to work/life balance. Being passionate about your work shouldn’t have to mean sacrificing every aspect of your life to it!
The international Game Workers Unite website has an excellent FAQ page addressing many common questions and concerns. They also have a resource page with links to everything from GWU literature to further reading.
