“I’ll apply to everything!”
This seems like a great strategy, right? You don’t know exactly what you want to do, so you’ll apply to fifteen different kinds of jobs or internships and see what sticks, right?
This is a major cause of people getting stuck on their job searches and not making progress.
Employers hire people for a reason. That means they are looking for someone to solve a problem, enhance a service, develop a product, streamline a system or manage a team. Rarely does an employer hire someone without a plan for using their skills and talents….which means that companies are looking for specific skill sets and experiences to match their needs. And that means if you’re unclear about what you’re looking for, companies don’t know how you would fit into their organization.
When a recruiter or hiring manager knows that they need to fill a client services role, they don’t have a lot of time to speculate about whether a general resume is going to match their needs. They want to see it laid out quite clearly and neatly that your experiences match what they are looking for.
Bottom line: you don’t need to know 110% what you want to do in a job or even match the role 100%, but you need to know what and how you’d contribute. And you need to demonstrate that knowledge in your application materials.
