I had the pleasure to participate, and have been involved in the startup community and events, such as AngelHack, Startup Weekend, and others, in the Seattle area for over the last 2 years.
Many students have asked how can they get some experience if they don’t have any internship.
For those of you who have never attended one of these 54-hour weekend event, I would highly recommend it – even just for curiosity.
Typically, it starts on Friday evening and goes all the way to Sunday night. The agenda goes sometime like this: pitch your idea, form a team, design/build/code/work/collaborate, prep, and presentation. And of course you get fed.
You do not need an idea to participate. You can choice to join the team with the idea that interest you the most. Different people bring different background to the team – software, hardware, design, marketing, website development, social media, UI, etc.; or help in whatever capacity the team need.
At the end of 54-hour high-energy weekend event, you will definitely experience various skills that are valuable in future endeavor such as:
- Leading the team (if you had an idea).
- Learning new things and to work with others.
- How to give a pitch or presentation.
Oh, and it is a competition (I did not find out till the 2nd day when I participated).
Last but not least, you will also get to meet new people and make friends along the way – maybe even co-founders of a new success startup!
